Domestic Violence and White House Women’s Council
Posted by businesswom on March 11, 2009
With all the publicity around young stars and domestic violence, I wanted to highlight the urgency of this issue in our community and abroad.
Internationally, issues concerning violence against women include de-humanizing mutilation rituals in African countries and even expand into day-to-day wage laborer abuses.
Amid my passion concerning this issue, it is important to note that domestic violence – a human rights violation according to Amnesty International – does not just happen against women. We also have to ensure our personal mental health to foster a nourishing environment for our families, husbands, and boyfriends.
Give back to your community by volunteering at local women’s shelters or searching for a job at a company dedicated to ending domestic violence. And, keep an ear out for issues being tackled by the White House Council for Women and Girls – announced today – that will serve as the expert advisory board to the President on issues like this. It will be led by Tina Tchen, White House Director of Public Liaison, who will also be the opening speaker at Policy & Action Day 2009.
